Oh good grief, a former employer of mine (UK manufacturer, and yes there are
a few) had a go at implementing SAP on AS/400 in the mad rush to beat the
Y2K bug in the old applications; they tried to implement just about all the
modules.

A quite powerful AS/400 (200+ user system) managed interactive responses of
5 seconds (average) some as high as 25. The consultants working on the
system were going berserk. At their request, the memory and processor were
upgraded, no change. Analysing the database, some physical files had 120+
logicals over them! My impression was that the application design had been
clubbed into rather than ported to AS/400. A real dogs dinner.

We replaced the AS/400 with NT servers and the average response time became
0.1 second. However, I have recently heard from a recent escapee from the
same place, that they have now thrown out SAP too. To my knowledge they had
spent £3m on it while I was there.

S.A.P.  =  Smaller Annual Profits ?
