RE: Web apps on the AS/400

I will admit that the ONLY reason I "hammer" on XML and other stuff like
that is to promote a greater awareness among iSeries 400 (read "RPG")
programmers. It can only be GOOD we programmers -- myself included -- become
first aware of new technology, then experiment with it, and then use it as
it fits.

A good application of XML is this: I can call an RPG program from my VB app,
using HTTP. The RPG app can return one or more records in XML format. My VB
app can use the XML string as a recordset. It's a fantastic tool for using
legacy (read "A stable, robust environment that never crashes <grin>") data
in my new-fangled n-tier VB stuff.

In the earlier case, a fellow programmer on this list showed how he _very
intelligently_ is using strings to pass data into a program. My point then
was to suggest XML -- as I did -- since it would be a perfect "fit".

But I will add this: Like it or not -- and I'm NOT saying this in a
smart-alec tone of voice, this is sincerely -- whether WE like it or not,
XML is here and it's going to be everywhere. And I'm sure you know that.
