There was a bridge in Ohio that fell down the day after the contract expired. It used to be that the state paid for the thing to be built, but budgeted no money for maintenance or guarantees how long it lasted. The contractors built the bridge, they were paid by the state, the bridge fell down. I used to think this was urban legend until some friends took me on a drive to see the actual evidence. I still suspect they were pulling my leg. But they assured me that it was the perfect bridge - the materials used were just enough investment to keep it standing until the contractors got paid. My friends in Kentucky tell me the roads are rigged to constantly need repairs so the tax payers & voters have visible evidence that the state's money is being spent on something, as we navigate past all the orange barrels & I saw a cute sign on a Louisville highway last weekend ... WHOA - RACING IS FOR HORSES ... I assume they were hinting that drivers should slow down, not an advertisement for the race track season. My favorite road signs are the DUCK CROSSING and YOU BETTER NOT EVEN THINK OF LITTERING HERE.
