WHat model of 8MM? IBM or not? What I/O Card is it connected to (ie 2621, 6501, 6534). If it's not IBM, what IBM model does it emulate? Inquiring minds need to know! Off the top of my head the #1 problem I've seen with IBM drives is if they are attached to #6501 a SCSI interposer must be attached between the 6501 and the tape cable or OS/400 ignores the tape drive.
