It's a 10+ year old modem, with (I believe) a 2400bps top speed, like the 
5853, and therefore should be used only as a doorstop.
I never saw one, so I don't know if it has the A/S button like the 5853 
did, but if so they may want to press the button in if trying to use Sync 
mode.

You sure about that model number ???

There is a 7858 but I find NO reference to a 5858...

If it's really a 7858, it should respond exactly like the
Multitech modem(IBM 7852). What exactly are you trying to
do ???
