You could always query the file QADBIFLD.  IBM built this on V3R2 to store
every field in every file.  You create a file and this automatically gets
updated.  The reason for this is that Client developers didn't want to mess
with outfiles or API's.  This has what they needed.  And if you have a
large number of files, like we do, then maybe it will exceed 1.8GB like it
does on our system.  If you have to sacrifice that much disk, you might as
well use it.

If anybody knows the name of the file field description API, I'd appreciate
it.  A good example would be even better.  Thanks!  In the meantime, I'll
wander through InfoCenter hoping to stumble upon it...
