You have a few options, but it depends on the carrier. You are lloking for a
supported protcol that the AS/400 can also implement.

For Phones the actual over the air is call Short Messageing Services (SMS)
and is usaaly a text message between 120 and 140 characters in length, each
carrier sets this as an option.

To interface to the carrier you need an interface protocol;

    TAP = Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol - Dial up ASCII/Async Usaly 2400
7E1.
    SNPP = Simple Network Paging Protocol - RFC-1864 Internet Socket based.
    WCTP = Wireless Communication Transfer Protocol - An XML Based Internet
Protocol.
    TNPP = Telocator Network Paging Protocol - Usally ASCII/Async Switch
Protocol.
    SMPP = Short Messaging Paging Protocol - Usally ASCII/Async Switch
Protocol.

    SNPP has some good Perl implementations !

Good Luck,
