Ow!  My brain hurts just thinking about that!

Ah, yes, good old POP!  The most often shared product never paid for!  How many copies did IBM actually sell of that thing?  50?  (One was ours!  Honest!)  Installed on 50,000 S/36's?

Well, Kathleen, without POP or another IBM product called DSU, you were stuck with S/36 SEU, which was a one-line-at-a-time source editor. 

Sorry I can't answer your questions, and hopefully others can, good luck!  Remember to watch out for the 64K compiled object size limit!  <g>
