Re: default route with PPP

Okay,

        Group, please read carefully before responding to this note.

        The problem is not making a DEFAULT route work, but rather replacing
the DEFAULT route with a backup DEFAULT route when the Primary one is not
available.  In BSD we can use a combination of etc/ppp.conf, etc/ppp.link,
and etc/ppp.linkdown to do this an force the new DEFAULT by overlaying the
DEFAULT link with the "add! default HISADDR" command, using the same command
in the linkdown to back out the override.

         Now on my WIN/95 workstation if I dial an ISP that route becomes
the DEFAULT but if I look at the netstat -rn I  see both the permanent
route, and the new ISP route.  Just the ISP route has a higher priority so
everything not specifically routed will and does go to the ISP.  (I know
this works as I have done it when the DSL gateway router has been down.)

        So what we need here is a way on the iSeries to either temporarily
override the DEFAULT as we do in BSD, or set the priority as Mr. Gates does
for us.  You might also view the links:
