I hear you. Midrange Computing is hitting me up trying to get me to subscribe. Claiming they've went back to more technical, but what do I see but articles like: "The Public Cost of Private Profit" - tying IBM to the Holocaust "How to Run an Effective Meeting" "Full Circle" - extolling you to conserve energy in the office. This ain't why I would buy this magazine. Some would argue that people should hear this. I argue, 'Do they want to pay to hear it?' For example, some years ago I served on the board of a local users group. At that time we were transitioning from a mix of technical and managerial topics to strictly technical topics. Why? Because attendance dropped sharply off at meetings which were not technical. As much as I liked some of the other speakers, their topics, and felt that people needed to hear them, I could read the writing on the wall. I have to buy these resources myself, and since it's my money, I'm very fickle. I used to get a lot out of the two main magazines but over the last couple years that has not been the case. I doubt I'll renew the mag subscriptions this year but maybe something like the Experts Journal would be good. A great benefit that the java and Microsoft world has over us is the plethora of books available at bookstores - where you can peruse before you buy. I have returned books to Amazon.com before but it's an additional hassle that I don't want to go through. Plus, since I would have read it, I feel guilty unless the book did not live up to the marketing.
