A consolidated server may be what iSeries evolves to. And it looks like
it may. But without a system that small businesses can afford and rely
on, what benefit will this bring. I mean, won't IBM try to sell you the
most expensive box they have? If they only have one model "eServer" and
it fails, doesn't their entire line (which would all be eServers) also
fail? Will the OS/400 identity be lost? If not in the user community,
then perhaps within IBM?
Anyway, my point about C was that the grammar for the C language is
being used in most new languages and the "grammar (if you call it that)
in HTML is being used in XML, XSL, CSS, etc. Java is based on C syntax,
JavaScript is based on Java syntax, C# is based on C++ and Java. So by
being able to read Latin (i.e., "C"), you can pretty much read Spanish
(C++), Italian (Java), French (C#), etc. You won't be able to speak
these languages without practice and training, but if you only know
English (or RPG), you will, at best have difficulty reading other
languages.
