>because whatever IBM does to make their apps run crappy >affects mine as well. Lou, THIS is what I was missing! The numbers! Our 510-2144 512 meg P30 is getting tired. It has no "split" CPW ratings, sporting a traditional single 111 CPW. If I read the handbook properly, we could replace it with an 820-2395 (370 CPW). 35 CPW interactive $36k, P10. 70 CPW interactive $64k, P20. 120 CPW interactive $116k, P20. 240 CPW interactive $191k, P20. If I think that the bulk of my machine processing is interactive, and want to double the existing power, I'd need to spend $191k. If I think there's a 50/50 mix, I'd need to spend $116k. That $75k difference is the interactive "tax." If we could redo our apps to run mostly in batch, we could save $155k! I think I'll try to pitch that to my management here, and see what they think. After all, if we can put in a cheaper machine at the customer sites, we can more readily compete with other solutions... Thanks for moving me in the right direction!
