See if you have a HOSTS.SAM file.� This is the sample host file that MS ships with Win9x and has the comments�as in Peter's reply.

There is nothing magical about a host name in your local HOSTS file.� It is�only an easy-to-remember name reference to the actual IP address. Just as you can have several different name listings in the telephone directory�for the same telephone number so it is with host names in the HOST file. When the�number is dialed�it rings to the same phone no matter which name listing was used to get the number.
