I've used Get External Data (MS Query) and the native file transfer. I
don't want to return a set of rows, just one value into one cell. Using
SQLRequest I could substitute values from other cells into the sheet.
Say for example I have a few dozen rows of data in a spreadsheet and I need
to get some corresponding data from the AS/400. I have employee numbers
in the spreadsheet and I want to get hourly rate from the AS/400.

Cell B1 has the employee number and I put this formula in B2.

=SQL.REQUEST("DSN=QDSN_Hanna;UID=m_akins;PWD=test",,,"select rate from
empmas where empno =" & B1)
