The S36E was the original System/36 Environment, that was shipped with the
first release of OS/400.  To use it you had to have the source for your
system, and you had to recompile, so many couldn't use it.  Also the
performance was not stellar.  (Although IBM proved over time that if you
throw enough hardware against a performance problem, you could fix it using
the brute force method.)

When the 64 bit hardware was completed, IBM figured out that the could
build a "native" version of SSP that ran without recompilation.  So before
the first RISC boxes, IBM built a model of the Advanced System/36, the
model 236.  In  V3R7 this became the M36 environment.  It was a great idea,
but it was too little, too late.

The S36E never supported WSU, buy the M36 did.

Hi all,
I will go ahead and apologize for being so ignorant of this, but here
goes.....

What is the difference between  M36, S36EE and regular old *S36.

I just don't know?????
