If it is mission critical application that can never be down, you
should have at least 2 servers, two internet connection with two ISPs, which
is impossible.  A load balanced server farm by design would give you better
uptime than any single server solution.  Nothing can be running all the
time.


Why not? If it is truly that important, say a life support system. Wouldn't
you want it to be 99.9999% uptime or better?

2 redundant servers? Easy.
2 internet connections from 2 ISPs? Expensive but can be done. My previous
ISP did that. They were having problems with a ISPs uptime, so they got
another connection from a different provider as redundancy.
