Not completely screwed.
If you upgrade to a new machine you carry your software subscription
forward to that system (provided it's in the same, or lower, software
tier).

Excuse me for being late to the conversation here, but this thread
made me wonder...

What is the point of being on software subscription if you have one of
these machines that won't go to V5R2?  If you bought a 3 year software
subscription for your model 400 or your model 40S, you're screwed no?
