Actually under 4.4 it is 2 bytes for a max length of 65535 bytes. IBM keeps stretching things. Christopher K. I think VARCHAR uses 1 byte per record to tell the system how much actual data there is in the maximum 4096 bytes allowable for VARCHAR.
