ssh = Secure SHell
ssl = Secure Sockets Layer

ssh provides a number of handy things - one of which is scp (Secure CoPy).
It allows you to do ftp-like file transfer without sending your login
information in the clear. It encrypts the exchange of information and
also protects against spoofing and man-in-the-middle attacks. Very
useful, and often the only remote connection allowed.
