I hear ya. Been there - had that done to me.
However, for any pertinent arguments against the move, the answer to THAT 
question is required.
There may be a valid reason as to why this move is required
for example, the software vendor they use is no longer supporting AS/400.
etc etc.

Can't answer that one I'm afraid.  We're both in similar lines of
business, so we're only allowed to talk technical not policy...
My guess is either the head office of the group is having another 'lets
put everyone on the same platform' moment or the board have been CONned
and inSULTed (if you know what I mean...)
