I don't care if IBM benefits, *I* benefit enough to justify the price.

It's a personal decision, and YMMV as I said. I pay $20 for a
Clancy/Brown/Coonts hard cover novel that I read and enjoy but that does not
provide a tangible benefit beyond the enjoyment. Dr Frank's book
contributes to my job satisfaction and serves as a reference.

I'm headed for the golf course after work, carrying my TaylorMade logo golf
bag that I bought, wearing my TaylorMade logo windshirt that I bought, to
play with TaylorMade golf clubs that I paid $2500 for, to lose Nike balls.
TaylorMade subsidizes none of that and yet festoons the lot with their logos
to turn me into a walking billboard. (actually Callaway should subsidize
that, but I digress). It's the way of the world.

I'm not sure why you feel IBM owes you a subsidy. Who's to say the price of
the book hasn't already been discounted by some IBM subsidy of the author,
or whatever. It's a purchase decision, make your voice known by not buying
at that price. Perhaps once the information is stale you can get a better
deal...

Dr Frank doesn't make an advertising message for IBM, by the way. He just
tells the facts. That it serves as an advertising message is a testament to
the system and its designers.

Tom,

So you pay $50 for an advertising msg from ibm.

I agree that his last book was worth the price and probably this book also.
But IBM benefits from us reading the book, so they should at least subsidize
it.
