Long tapes were never supported by IBM on any AS/400 tape drive.  They
worked on 3430 and 3422 from the System/38 era.

I remember trying to use some longer tapes on a 1600/3200 drive at
V1R1M0 (or whatever it was called then).  This would consistently crash
the entire machine.
