I'd almost swear that somewhere 5-10 years ago, there was the beginning of a 
'standard' for .sigs that said something like "a line containing only two 
dashes followed by a space, e.g., '-- ', would mark the beginning of a .sig 
attachment. This will allow replies to remove such attachments automatically."

Some e-mail clients seem to recognize '-- ' or some other configureable string 
and ignore following lines when spell-checking, etc. Unfortunately, all the 
different ways of denoting included Reply: text (indents, "> ", etc.) make it 
effectively impossible to keep up with.

Nowadays, I imagine some kind of MIME boundary would have to be used.
