This is going to take either an expert at this kind of thing or some detailed 
checking. Note that # (hash) is also known as a "pound sign" when referring to 
weights such as "6 pounds 5 ounces". I imagine UK English sees the hex value 
and interprets it as "£ (pound)".

That's pretty tenuous, I know, but the whole internationalization thing is 
tenuous no matter how precisely defined, IMO.
