RE: BRMS: System save only -- MIDRANGE-L

We have had BRMS installed for a spell.  We do get those pesky messages
about volume id's not enrolled or some such thing.  However, they seem to
be informational only and not show stoppers.

BRMS will allow you to save multiple libraries to multiple tape drives
in parallel.  According to documentation, you can save a single library
in parallel without BRMS by specifying a media definition (*MEDDFN) in
the device parameter of your save command.  Multiple libraries would
require BRMS.

You could do this, although I would not expect your existing backup
programs to behave exactly as they did prior to the installation of
BRMS.  I don't have much detail here, but I do know that unrecognized
volume ID's will need to be 'enrolled' in BRMS, even for use with basic
IBM SAVxxx commands.  So test first.

BRMS is complicated and requires planning to implement properly.  If you
just want to use the parallel save feature, you might be able to get
that running by trial and error, but you should plan on monitoring your
current saves and dealing with any new messages and/or errors before
they run unattended.  For a full-blown BRMS implementation, most people
would recommend the IBM one-week course, sounds like you're not looking
for that depth, but if might be helpful if you can afford the
time/expense.
