How about using one of the anonymous email services out there? Any email
sent to the "fake" email address would be routed back to your real email
address (in Notes). I haven't used any anonymizers (is that a word!) so I
don't know how quickly they pass the mail along.  FYI - sneakemail.com is
one example.

Another option might be to write a program than opens a TCP/IP socket on
port 25 to some SMTP server "out there" and see if you get the appropriate
response. You could even send an email to yourself that way.

I have this project to verify that we can send and receive email to the
outside world.  Duh, we can now, of course.  The problem is that they want
some sort of program that every x minutes verifies that we still can, and
if not, perform appropriate actions.
