Not everybody has a C compiler on their system, alas.

This is quite easy. I had to work with some private encryption algorithms
recently, and my trading partner only knew C. He gave me the C code, which
I compiled on the iSeries and wrapped the low-level C functions in RPG
procedures and exported the lot in a service program.

The other benefit to thinking along these lines is that it is quite possible
to find Linux or FreeBSD code that's already been written and tested that
does exactly what you want. It's usually easy enough to port that to the
iSeries and incorporate it as a service program. Search the net with
http://www.google.com and see what comes up for "opendir() example".
