This is probably the hardest way to go about this, but...

You could write a TN5250e client that acted as a printer.  Then, files
sent to it could simply be translated to text files.

I've managed to do this with the free Linux TN5250 printer daemon.  I've
hacked it up so that I can compile it under Windows and use it to receive
print jobs... Of course, now I'm working on getting it to play nicely with
the Unix versions of the same so that they can reside in the same source tree.

But anyway... it shouldn't be TOO hard to take that code and make it a DLL
that can be called from VB...
