Actually I believe that some of the Patents on Task Dispatching algorithms on the Sys/38 and AS/400 were some of the most valuable ones that Rochester did. And others like them. IBM: Hardware MS: Software ... with a significant amount devoted to user interface development. It seems the hardware based R&D would "show" larger impact.
