I have only 1 ASP correct....good question...I should have stated that.
1 ASP....6 disk units....all DPY/Active.

Also...I have tried 3 different tapes...and cleaned the drive between each
use.
It's a 7208 tape drive Model 342 (8mm drive).

Deleting the device/manually recreating wasn't hard...but unfortunately that
didn't work either.

A thought from when I've been in a similar situation (more than once).

List out the TAP01 device description (dspdevd tap01 output(*print).
Then vary off and delete.  Manually recreate the device.  There is no
need to IPL.  Vary back on and try the command.  There is a chance that
the autocreate at IPL description is being created with some kind of
error.

Also (in case you haven't), clean the drive and use a new tape.

Not much to go on.  I am assuming (since you don't mention it) that you
have no independent ASPs on your system.
