Well there is another way.
I used to have the CL format a "plain language" string to pass to the HLL.
This string embodies the selection criteria.  In the HLL, print a page with
the plain language text.  This way the end user knew their request was
processed but produced no records.

CHGVAR &QRY 'Customer number' *cat &custA
CHGVAR &QRYSLT 'CUNO *EQ' *cay &custA
OPNQRYF...
CALL HLL (&QRY)
in the HLL you'd have an output page showing the selection criteria.

If you can't change the parameter list, use the LDA to pass the value.
