thanks.  I though of the QMQRY, but they're not into new things here.  that
would have blown thier minds.

I flipped the order of files (few records / many records), ran a CPYFRMQRYF
and read the results sequentially in my RPG.

this simple change cut my runtime from around 30 minutes to a minute and a
half.

LIFE IS GOOD!

I have another thought. You may try use Query Manager to generate an
outfile to be read in the RPG programme.
Although the client you are working for does not have SQL, you can create
an SQL-statement in a sourcefile and create a Query Manager Query
(CRTQMQRY) object with this source. The SRC PF should have a length of 91.
Without SQL loaded on the machine you can still use the query engine that
uses OPNQRYF.

The OPNID is only used to identify the Open Data Path created by the
OPNQRYF and can be used with some commands like POSDBF. It is not a
reference to an alias of the file, IIRC.

Just another look at the problem.
