Unix only uses LF and not CR (or maybe I have it backwards - uses CR and
not LF - I can never remember right).

Hmm... I usually see this when I look at a PC file on a unix box. The
extra CR shows up as ^M. I believe that some programs handle the
differences with no problems. Notepad may not but I think Wordpad does.
Likewise on unix, emacs and vi show the ^M character but Open Office has
no problem. Emacs has a LF-CR compatibility mode and there is a way to
strip the CR off the end of the lines on unix, but I don't remember right
now.

Um, ftp? Forget all about the LF-CR crap and ftp directly from the unix
box. This is easy from the unix shell:

$ ftp myas400.mydomain.com
<username>
<password>
cd QSYS.LIB/LIBRARY.LIB
put myfile FILE.MEMBER
