With CA/400 you can also create the empty file via DDS on the 400 and run
"Data Transfer From AS/400" to get the field definitions, then use that
file when running "Data Transfer To AS/400".

Steven,

A fixed length pc file doesn't have any field definition - it's "flat" so
to speak.

if you create the file with fields defined already on the as/400 first,
before transfer, and then use ftp, I think you'll find that the field defs
are preserved. (i think - it works for save files anyway)

I have not tested this, but i would assume it would work.

If not, try ftping to a flat file (CRTPF - specify record length instead
of
source member name) and then copying that file, FMTOPT(*NOCHK), to an
existing, fields defined, file.

I mean by 'fields retained' that when I've transferred this file it's gone
up as a Source File, ie one big field, I want the discrete fields to stay
eg NAME, ADDRESS1, ADDRESS2 etc.
