going from V4R4 directly to V5R1, "there are issues" and they are
suggesting upgrade to v4r5 then to v5r1.

I work for an IBM premier business partner and have done several V4R4 to
V5R1 upgrades without any hitches.  There is no good reason to not perform
this upgrade.
