Are you giving the view that firewalls are unnecessary and that the perceived need is mostly based on sales hype? As to appliances, my understanding is that an appliance is a pre-loaded, pre-configured computer which performs limited functions (firewalls, NAS, etc.). Many firewall appliances are running Linux.
