If you thought coding gethostbyname by name was a hassle, your really not going to like this. First a ping is only going to validate the domain name, if Ping is not block. Try to ping IBM.com, microsoft.com. It will not validate the email address. You need to see if the domain has a MX record http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l/200110/msg01567.html if non use the A record. Then you would have to use sockets to connect to the mail server, following the protocol for SMTP http://www.zvon.org/tmRFC/RFC2821/Output/chapter4.html I have done this in Visual basic, but not on the AS/400.
