AFAIK, with DDS you cannot have fields with program-determined lengths. You
_could_ put in all kinds of fields and condition them with indicators, I
suppose.

It might be possible with the display APIs.

Or with the USRDFN - but this means you construct & manage the window data
stream yourself. I don't know if you can read it.
