It improved the system performance to such an extent that new hardware was not 
required, which hurt IBM's pockets.   Look at the
length of time it took the S/36 users to move to the 400 despite how many 
carrots (and sticks) were used.  And when they did so many
stayed in 36EE!!

then, if it simply improved the system, why was IBM so
unhappy with it. I figure, that anything that will improve
the system would drive sales in the right direction...
