Not being a group ware user I don't really know too much about what you need, but OpenLDAP might add what you need to Sendmail. If so you could have it all for the cost of hardware. Plus you could use Evolution as the mail client which does all the Outlook things. It can even work completely seamlessly with an Exchange server (not that you would ever want an Exchange server).
