Problem printing barcodes

When I try to print spoolfiles with barcodes, the printer goes nuts. It
prints one line of garbage at the top of the page and then prints out blank
pages until the paper tray is empty.
My operating system is V4R5.
The printer is an HP4 with the following device description:

I've tried looking in IBM's manuals and redbooks, but I can't find any
answers. Does anyone have any idea how to get this to work?
