My mistake! I assumed that the problem was with the CHGVAR command. In fact the programs were processing the output of WRKSPLF into a file and it is this output format which has slightly changed with the new OS version. (the filenumber column is longer now). This means that every line from WRKSPLF had shifted by 2 chars. Therefore CHGVAR is unchanged.
