This reminds me of contests between adding machines and... ummm... abaci(???) 
years ago where the expert abacus user almost always won in speed tests. So I 
definitely agree with your point.

But, Ray, even so, have you ever tried learning to multiply on an abacus? 
Scalability rears its ugly head quickly.
