by definition, this falls in the exotic category. But you can actually
just read it the normal way and update as you go, but you have to
pay attention to checksums, etc, so not for the faint of heart.

because you don't do this. The question was not really
if and how one can change a save file, but solely if objects
can be different in memory and on disk for extended periods
(like hours) and the save file was positive proof that the answer
is YES. and, BTW, this *did* cause me gray hair several
months ago as I *was* hit with this and couldn't understand
why when I restored from the save file I just changed that
the changes were gone. Why would I change the save file?
To circumvent a bug in IBM's CHGOBJD. (Had to do with
debugging information).
