I do agree with you that too many people worry too much about saving a microsecond here and there (spending a megasecond to save a microsecond), but I also think that we cannot just squander CPU cycles. Our machines are 100 times as fast now, but we also try to do a 100 times as much, so we still have to think about efficiency. Or rather, we COULD do a 100 times as much if we didn't squander the CPU on bloat.
