May be a good idea just to call 1800.IBM.SERV and give them the system
serial - that will tell you if it's on HW maintenance or not.

In addition to my regular duties, I teach a class part time at the local
community college. They recently started experiencing a very unusual
problem. They are using a model 170 on V4R4. This box is used only for
student use.
The problem is that the system drops connections to the outside world, with
no log as to what has happened. Last night I got on the system at 5 and
it was OK. I tried again at 6 and could not connect. The console (PC)
could not even access the system. We IPL'd and the system came up. I
looked at the history log and there were only 3 entries, all normal
activity. I also checked the display on the box while we couldn't connect
and it read a normal '01 B N'. I also looked at SST and problem log
and found nothing in those areas.
This started about 2 weeks ago and the system is being IPL'd at least 3
times a day to allow academic instruction to go on.
Nobody seems to know what type of a maintenance program they do/don't have
so I hate to call IBM if we can solve this with out there assistance.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
