Dennis, That is rather clever Dennis. I see where that might work! I'll try it out. As to how I got a packed value in a *CHAR field - let me explain what I'm doing: I have an RPG ILE procedure that given a key to a file, chains to the record and returns the entire record as a data structure. Easy to work when calling the procedure in RPG. However in a CLP, I get a big *CHAR variable and start substringing it down to get my individual fields. Thus I need to get my packed data from my substring character variable.
