Sounds like you have an older JetDirect box..... Any chance you could use a
new unit?

Vern,
Thanks for your response. I was aware of the the site that you provided the
link to and had created the following
device description for a 6400-015-A00 connected to the network with an
external HP JetDirect 300X :

CRTDEVPRT DEVD(PRT99) DEVCLS(*LAN) TYPE(3812) MODEL(1) +
         LANATTACH(*IP) PORT(9100) ATTACH(*DIRECT) ONLINE(*YES) +
         FONT(011 *NONE) FORMFEED(*CONT) SEPDRAWER(*FILE) +
         PRTERRMSG(*INFO) MSGQ(*CTLD) ACTTMR(170) INACTTMR(*SEC15) +
         LINESPEED(19200) WORDLEN(8) PARITY(*NONE) STOPBITS(1) +
         TRANSFORM(*YES) MFRTYPMDL(*IBM6400) PPRSRC1(*CONT132) +
         PPRSRC2(*NONE) ENVELOPE(*NONE) ASCII899(*NO) +
         IMGCFG(*NONE) CHRID(*SYSVAL) RMTLOCNAME('XX.XXX.X.XX') +
         SYSDRVPGM(*IBMSNMPDRV) +
         PUBLISHINF(*UNKNOWN *UNKNOWN *UNKNOWN *UNKNOWN *BLANK)

I'm able to vary on the printer, and start the printer. In the QSYSOPR
message que, I get a CPF3382 indicating that the writer started.
After about 10 seconds the writer goes back to varied on and I get a CPF3397
in QSYSOPR stating that the writer did not end normally.

When I check the joblog it says:

Message . . . . : Could not establish SNMP communications with device
PRT99.
Cause . . . . . : Was not able to establish SNMP communications with
device
PRT99. The reason code is 2. The reason codes and their meanings are as
follows: 2 - The device appears to be an SNMP device but does not support
the required level of an industry standard SNMP protocol.

Any ideas?

TIA
