So do I understand correctly that to run a SWT based application I would
need:

1) The application
2) The "right" version of the JRE
3) The "right" version of Eclipse

All loaded and running on my machine?

Yes.  The ONLY occasion Eclipse is needed at run-time is when running SWT
apps.  The rest of the time, Eclipse can be thought of as super-SEU +
debugging tools.

Regarding thick client: We're speaking past each other.  I believe you are
thinking of an interactive application and I am thinking of a batch
application.  There is no need for any UI at all for a batch application.
