It's been a long time since i've done anything extensive with opnqryf, but
IIRC, you never needed to count quotes cause I used double quotes instead
of two single quotes - example:
chgvar &qryslt ('field1 *eq "' *cat &myfld1 *cat '" +
*and field2 *eq "' *cat &myfld2 *cat '"') etc...
you get the idea - single qoutes to wrap text, double quotes for the
compares to alpha fields.

I agree, SQL seems a solid choice, especially if you are creating the
statement on the fly, but I have to ask, what do you find 'error prone' in
using opnqryf?
it's pretty strait forward, and rock solid IMO.
